Malama Kaua'i is a Kilauea based non-profit working to raise awareness on the importance of sustainability, to assist in implementing sustainable practices and support sustainable projects beneficial to the community. The word "malama" means to tend or take care of and, of course, Kaua'i is the name of our beautiful island home.

The Vision: A Sustainable Kaua'i
Malama Kaua'i is a Kilauea based non-profit working to raise awareness on the importance of sustainability, to assist in implementing sustainable practices and support sustainable projects beneficial to the community. The word "malama" means to tend or take care of and, of course, Kaua'i is the name of our beautiful island home.
The Hourglass Approach:
Malama Kaua'i works at the community level (bottom up) by seeding and supporting sustainable, community projects, educating about sustainability and supporting sustainability practices in the home and workplace. Malama Kaua'i is also working at the island level (top down) to engage and rally groups around sustainable initiatives, create and support sustainable policies and perpetuate Hawaiian traditions related to our vision.
Projects:
Malama Kaua'i has currently undertaken a variety of projects relating to the health and sustainability of Kaua'i, including:
0. Kilauea town action plan: developing and implementing a plan to move towards community sustainability. The town currently being modeled is Kilauea on the tip of the North Shore.
0. The Malama Kaua’i Green Map: a full color, printed map, highlighting: locally-owned businesses doing their part to be environmentally responsible, alternative transportation such as bike paths and bus routes, non-profits, museums, and cultural centers, all contributing to the well-being and sustainability of the island.
0. SaveKauai.org: an islandwide activism website hosting daily news posts, user forums, free classified ad postings and a sustainable events calendar
0. Free E-Newsletter: highlighting organizations and individuals who are modeling the way
0. The Malama Kaua’i Farm Incubator Program: a “beyond organic” farmer training program that currently accepting application for interns. Once you've gone throw a complete grow cycle, roughly 12 weeks, you qualify for a paid staff position and ultimately can obtain your own farm plot. Participants will learn soil remediation techniques, irrigation, starter and planting preparation, care and harvest skills and the business side of finding and maintaining community accounts to distribute the produce to. This program currently feed 60 local families and counting every week.
0. Eco-Roundtable: quarterly meeting open to all environmental groups on Kaua’i in order to network, set goals, and cooperatively create a more sustainable island.
0. Bi Weekly Radio Show: brings both local, national and internationally recognized guests on air to share their knowledge on a wide range of sustainability topics including the environment, energy, food, housing and waste systems to name a few
0. School Gardens: assisting area schools with the set-up and maintenance of school gardens, like the Kilauea and Hanalei Elementary Schools.
0. Affordable Housing: Actively working with the state and county housing departments, landowners and businesses to bring affordable housing projects to market
0. Sustainable Solutions: sponsoring events that build government and community awareness about sustainable, solid waste solutions, such as the Max3R Conference or the "L.E.G.S. Kaua'i Sustainability Conference" in 2007
0. Implementation of community recycling programs (Kilauea Town Project)
0. Supporting appropriate land use and housing requirement legislation. |
